Senator Vieira Calls For Carnival To Be Treated As Key Economic Sector
Independent Senator Anthony Vieira SC is calling on the Government to recognise Carnival not merely as a seasonal celebration, but as a key pillar of the country’s creative or orange economy.
Speaking in the Senate on Tuesday, Senator Vieira urged the administration to adopt a long-term, strategic approach to sustaining and expanding the festival.
He said that while Carnival generates significant employment and foreign exchange, it continues to be treated as an informal activity, rather than a structured industry.
Senator Vieira was piloting a motion titled “Securing the Cultural, Economic and Institutional Sustainability of Carnival.”
