SWMCOL: Beetham Landfill Fire Contained, Smoke May Affect POS And Environs
The Solid Waste Management Company Limited (SWMCOL) has confirmed that a fire at the Beetham Landfill, which started on Sunday night, has been contained.
A statement from the company confirmed that the blaze started on the eastern side of the landfill at 9:55pm and progressed toward the southeastern area of the site.
« With the prompt support of the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Services, the spread of the fire was successfully contained at approximately 12:30 am on Monday 5th January, 2026. »
SWMCOL said significant levels of smoke may intermittently affect Port of Spain and its environs and urged people with respiratory conditions to exercise caution when traversing the Beetham Highway and surrounding areas.
