THA Chief Secretary Expresses Disappointment Over WASA Well Vandalism Case
Tobago House Assembly Chief Secretary Farley Augustine has expressed disappointment that authorities have not yet identified those responsible for the vandalism of four Water and Sewerage Authority wells on the island – an incident that disrupted water supply to thousands of customers across 17 communities.
Although nine people, including one WASA employee, were arrested, they were all released without charge on Tuesday, an outcome the Chief Secretary said fell short of expectations.
« My disappointment only stems from the fact that I really want the culprits to pay for that. I am not sure how much evidence the police actually has, because you would appreciate that these facilities operate out there in the wild – no camera systems, no physical security, where it’s fenced, it is not locked away. »
While emergency repairs restored the damaged equipment, Chief Secretary Augustine noted the operation was costly and has renewed calls for tighter security to better protect public utility assets from future acts of vandalism.
