Tobago is set to see a boost in its sports and youth development through a new partnership with the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and the Division of Community Development, Youth Development and Sport. The collaboration was the focus of a recent meeting between Phillip Watts, Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs, and Wane Clake, Secretary of Community Development, Youth Development and Sport.
During the courtesy visit, Minister Watts expressed the Ministry’s commitment to assisting the THA in its vision for the island’s youth and sport. Secretary Clarke outlined key areas requiring support, including the maintenance of ageing light infrastructure at facilities, professional development for coaches and groundskeepers, and the need for quality-assured certifications for local training programs.
A significant point of the discussion was clarifying roles and responsibilities between the THA and National Sporting Bodies concerning Tobagonian athletes. Additionally, Megan Morrison, Wane Clarke’s assistant Secretary, highlighted the urgent need to upgrade and certify the track at the Dwight Yorke Stadium to enable it to host international competitions.
The visit concluded with a tour of several key sports facilities, including the Dwight Yorke Stadium and the Caanan/Bon Accord Recreational Grounds.
