With the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections approaching on Monday, People’s National Movement (PNM) candidate for Bethel/New Grange, Sterlan Timothy, has issued a dignified response to recent criticisms from rival Farley, choosing to take the moral high road rather than engage in personal attacks. Addressing a gathering of supporters, Timothy refuted the suggestion that he is not « polished » or « worthy » enough to lead, asserting that such thinking damages the democratic process and crushes the dreams of the youth.

Timothy grounded his rebuttal in spiritual principle, declaring to Farley and the electorate that « God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the call ». He drew a sharp comparison to the biblical disciples—fishermen and tax collectors who were far from flawless yet were chosen for a higher purpose. Timothy argued that while some may have a past that people judge, true leadership is defined by a calling to serve rather than a perfect résumé.

Conceding that he may not yet know every administrative procedure or rule of the Assembly, Timothy contended that systems can be learnt and procedures taught. However, he emphasised that « love for the people » and a commitment to their future cannot be taught in a classroom; it must already live within the leader. Timothy stressed that public office is not about securing titles like « Secretary » or « Assistant Secretary, » but about serving with humility, honesty, and respect. He concluded by positioning himself not as a politician seeking status, but as a defender and advocate for his community.
