It is the end of an era in Tobago.
MovieTowne, the island’s only multiplex, is shutting its doors for good, citing years of dwindling crowds and mounting costs.
The company’s Chief Executive Officer, Amrita Baboolal, confirmed the cinema’s closure, pointing to a prolonged economic downturn, reduced attendance, and costly equipment upgrades.
« The closure of MovieTowne Tobago was a result of several compounding factors, including a prolonged economic decline that led to ongoing financial losses and reduced audience turnout over several years. »
She noted that key systems, from digital projectors to ticketing terminals, needed major investment, even as box office returns slipped.
« While the decision was not taken lightly, as MovieTowne remained deeply committed to the Tobago community and believed it played a meaningful cultural and social role, the facility also faced increasing operational challenges, with critical equipment requiring significant capital investment that was no longer financially viable. »
Ms. Baboolal said to save costs, the Tobago location switched to a limited schedule: Thursdays through Sundays and public holidays, but even then, seats stayed empty.
“Despite these adjustments, audience turnout and population levels were insufficient to sustain the business.”
She said MovieTowne operated in Tobago as a leased property and has plans for a respectful exit, removing assets and restoring the space, as the lease requires.
« This location was operated as a leased property, and MovieTowne will conclude its tenancy on positive terms, responsibly removing its assets and restoring the space in accordance with the lease agreement. We extend our sincere thanks to the people of Tobago for their continued support over the years and are truly saddened that this chapter has come to an end. »
The closure of MovieTowne Tobago lands in a traditionally soft month for cinemas, with Ms. Baboolal noting that January is traditionally a slower period for movie attendance due to post-holiday expenses, the resumption of school, and a shift in consumer spending towards the Carnival season, which is relatively short this year.
