Tobago has seen a significant increase in grant funding from the National Commission for Self Help Limited (NCFSHL), with hundreds of thousands of dollars distributed to applicants on the island.
In November, the NCFSHL distributed grants to Tobago applicants amounting to $630,000 and on Monday, another grant distribution ceremony was held at the Hampden/Lowlands Multi-Purpose Facility.
The Commission’s Chairman, Vishnu Ramlakhan, assured that Tobago will receive its fair share from the NCFSHL as he compared what the island received in previous years.
‘In 2024, Tobago East received 1.79% and Tobago West received 2.3%. I want to say under the new government, in the year 2025, Tobago East so far has received 12.94% and Tobago West 18.65%. »
Chief Executive Officer Lester Leu articulated the Commission’s dedication to supporting Tobagonians, adding that the grants also represent hope for the recipients.
« Forty-one recipients valued at TT$655,000. These grants underscore the Commission’s commitment to empowering citizens and advancing community development. The National Commission for Self Help views housing not simply as a shelter but as a foundation for stability, self-reliance and sustainable development. »
Chief Secretary Farley Augustine, commenting on the increased Self Help budget allocation for Tobago, said it reflects what true equity means.
« I must express on behalf of the island of Tobago gratitude for a shift in public policy concerning how we receive social welfare grants, social welfare programmes such as the ones we have under the National Commission for Self Help. As I look in the audience this morning, I see so many faces of deserving people, people I know deserve to get. People who I know have been knocking on the doors for a while. »
Member of Parliament for Tobago West Joel Sampson gave his commitment to advocating for Tobagonians who are in need of this assistance. Tobagonians were also reminded to avail themselves of the support for community projects offered by the Commission.
