The Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation is warning the public against the use of unregistered electric scooters and motorcycles on the nation’s roads, as well as riding without the required driving permits.
In a statement, the Ministry said these vehicles are mechanically propelled and therefore fall under the definition of motor vehicles in the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chap. 48:50.
It reminded that under Section 12(1) of the Act, it is an offence to use, keep, or allow the use of any motor vehicle that is not properly registered. Additionally, under Section 42(1), persons must hold a valid driving permit for the class of vehicle being operated.
The Ministry warned that anyone found in breach of these provisions will face enforcement action in accordance with the law.
It is also urging all road users to comply with the regulations to ensure safety and responsible use of the nation’s roadways.
Further, the Ministry said the Licensing Authority reserves the right to refuse registration of any vehicle on safety grounds under Section 27 of the Act.
