It was not just about dazzling deyas but a powerful reminder of the celebration’s significance, as the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) made its grand return as host of this year’s Festival of Lights after a decade.

‘From Darkness to Light, Shaping a Brighter Tomorrow’ was the theme of this event, which saw thousands converge at the Couva Main Road car park to celebrate on Sunday.

The festivities included cultural performances, an expo by the agencies of the Ministry of Public Utilities, the crowning of the Divali Queen, and a bamboo bending competition.

Ushering in the event was Minister of Public Utilities Barry Padarath, who pledged his commitment to the people of T&T, as well as those within T&TEC.

« It is only the start of returning good things to the people of Trinidad and Tobago. When you stand with Dharma, Dharma stands with you. And that is why tonight I can tell you I stand with the worker and the people of the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Company. »

The Festival of Lights honours the goddess of Divali, Mother Lakshmi, otherwise known as the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

The evening also showcased a vibrant line-up of cultural performances. Among them, T&TEC Transmission Division’s Shamene Ramrattan reflected on the festival’s deeper meaning, noting that it commemorates the story of the rescued goddess, Mother Sita.

« From darkness to light, shaping a brighter tomorrow » mirrors the age-old story of the rescue of Mother Sita by Lord Rama. Through courage, righteousness and unwavering faith, Lord Rama was able to defeat the forces of evil, restoring peace, hope and light to the world. »
