TTPOST SUSPENDS MERCHANDISE SHIPMENT TO THE US

A major disruption is hitting the global postal system. The Trinidad and Tobago Postal Corporation, TTPost, has announced the temporary suspension of all merchandise shipments to the United States. The move is a direct response to a new U.S. Executive Order that ends the “de minimis” exemption. This exemption previously allowed goods valued at 800 U.S. dollars or less to enter the country duty-free. As of today, August 29, all international postal items containing merchandise, regardless of value, are now subject to customs duties.
The change has created logistical challenges for postal services worldwide, with economic implications for local small businesses and individuals who rely on international shipping for e-commerce and personal packages. TTPost says it is “actively engaging with international partners” to resolve the matter and resume services as soon as possible. Letter mail and documents are not affected.
The TTPost announcement comes as other national postal carriers, including those in India and several European nations, also temporarily halted their merchandise shipments to the U.S. in response to the same order.
