The United States has confirmed that it carried out airstrikes targeting ISIS elements in North-West Nigeria.
In a statement issued late on Thursday, US President Donald Trump said the operation was authorised under his direction as Commander-in-Chief, citing concerns over recent attacks attributed to the extremist group, particularly against Christian communities in the region.
The US military said camps operated by the militants in Sokoto State, near the border with Niger, were targeted, with an initial assessment indicating multiple fatalities.
President Trump described the Christmas Day strikes as decisive, citing concerns over attacks attributed to the group.
Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, said the action was a joint operation and stressed it was not connected to any particular religion.
