WASA Reports Temporary Drop In Desalcott Water Production

Water production at the Desalination Company of Trinidad and Tobago (DESALCOTT) has dropped after a sudden deterioration in the quality of seawater entering the plant.
The Water and Sewerage Authority (WASA) confirmed that DESALCOTT detected abnormal levels of organic material in its raw water intake since February 22nd, prompting the company to scale back operations to protect equipment and preserve drinking-water quality.
Despite the setback, WASA stressed there is “no risk to public health” and that all treated water continues to meet the hgihest safety standards.
WASA said while production levels remained largely stable throughout late February, a shift in raw water conditions forced a further reduction in output, on March 2nd.
As a result, several communities across Central and South Trinidad – including Caroni, Chaguanas, Couva, San Fernando, Marabella, La Romain, Fyzabad, Siparia and surrounding districts – are expected to experience reduced supply.
WASA said investigations are underway, including sampling near the Couva River outlet, to determine what triggered the water-quality changes.
