On the third installment of Behind the Silence: Youth in Crisis, we explore how gender double standards and societal expectations around emotions are impacting the mental health of Bahamian youth.

Gabriel John, President of the Beacon Ignited Youth Group, opens up about how young men are often told to suppress their emotions, being told “men don’t cry.” He explains how this pressure can lead to anger, unhealthy coping mechanisms like drinking, risky sexual behavior, or even gang involvement, and how breaking the cycle begins with allowing yourself to feel.

John stresses the importance of building strong morals, values, and self-worth, while finding safe outlets for emotions such as journaling, talking with someone, or embracing vulnerability. His message is clear: expressing emotions is not weakness, it’s part of being human.

This episode continues our mission to highlight the unseen struggles of Bahamian teens and spark conversations that lead to healing and solutions.
