Youth voices are taking on an increasingly influential role in shaping the future of Trinidad and Tobago’s economy.
At the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, students and young professionals convened to share fresh ideas and practical solutions, aimed at advancing economic diversification and long-term growth.
Representative for the student clubs, Shinik‑Ann Duprey, reminded participants that they have a critical role to play in economic transformation.
« We are policymakers. We are future policymakers, entrepreneurs, legal practitioners, analysts, and behavioral scientists. Our responsibility is to think critically about the structural challenges facing our region and to contribute innovative, grounded, and actionable solutions. »
She also highlighted the specialised contributions of the various student groups involved.
« The Economic Society examines climate risk and macroeconomic implications. The Management Society explores strategic leadership and innovation. The Finance and Investment Society addresses capital mobilization and financial structures. The Agribusiness Society focuses on practical enterprise and value chain development. »
Student coordinator Dylon Singh reflected on how last year’s event shaped his academic and professional development.
« I developed sharper analytical skills, stronger policy awareness, and a deeper appreciation for evidence-based reasoning. I learned how to engage respectfully in disagreements, how to defend a position under scrutiny, and how to connect economic theory to lived reality. »
Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Dr. Acolla Lewis-Cameron, urged students to remain curious as they pursue their academic journeys.
« I want to remind you to never stop inquiring because that is where innovation starts, that’s where solutions come from, by your inquiry. And so this afternoon, I trust that the discussion will be rich. I trust that you will ask questions, you will challenge the status quo, and that is what we look for in our graduates. »
The youth forum was held on Wednesday at The UWI St. Augustine Campus, providing a platform for the next generation of thinkers to engage directly with the pressing economic issues of the region.
