Amid growing climate concerns the Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service has announced plans to set up 100 weather stations across the country before next June. The Met Service says this will enhance climate data collection and address the accelerating impacts of climate change. Radhica De Silva and Ivan Toolsie went to the ASJA Girls College in San Fernando, where one of the 3D-printed automatic weather stations was officially launched.

The Trinidad and Tobago Disaster Risk Management Conference & Expo incorporated the special needs of the disadvantaged in its Disaster Response Planning Presentation. In a panel discussion, Morgan Lewis of the Autistic Society, spoke on behalf of the Coalition of Disability Organisations and said not all disabilities are visible and different disabilities and conditions vary to the individual. Ms. Lewis said one of the defining moments of the autism spectrum is for the individual to deal with sudden changes at the moment.

Pregnancy during adolescence has far-reaching negative consequences on the educational and employment trajectories of teen mothers. To empower these young mothers to thrive and break intergenerational cycles of poverty, the Division of Wellness and Social Protection designed the Programme for Adolescent Mothers in 2003. Social Worker, Erla Bacchus-Charles, said more on the programme’s mission and vision. Further, the programme employs a holistic range of educational, developmental and skills training. But while the programme has seen many success stories and a reduction in the number of mothers below the age of 13, Ms. Bacchus-Charles believes early conversation is the best prevention measure.

Minister of Finance Colm Imbert has received encouraging news from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which gave T&T a favourable outlook for growth. In its Country Report, the IMF said for the first time in a decade, T&T is experiencing a gradual and sustained economic recovery. The report praised Government's fiscal policies, its management of the public debt, diversification efforts and moves to strengthen its tax regime, and its climate and green energy agenda. The report also added that economic growth is expected to gain momentum this year, with real GDP expected to expand by 2.4%. However, the report indicated that while T&T is seeing growth, it has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

As crime continues to affect communities across the country, Crime Stoppers and Neighbourhood Crime Watch have established over 2,000 community groups. Director Darrin Carmichael believes these groups have been instrumental in assisting many communities affected by crime. The Neighbourhood Crime Watch also has been setting up groups in hotspots. Otto Carrington reports on how these systems are different from those in other communities.
