In China, the government has prioritized the provision of sufficient, safe, and nutritious food supplies and has engaged in agricultural modernization and rural revitalization to enhance food security. In this edition of The Hub, Wang Guan talks to Dr. Zhao Bing, representative and country director of the World Food Programme (WFP) China Office, to discuss the challenges facing vulnerable countries and communities and how the WFP goes about solving some of the most pressing issues. Zhao remarks that as many as 309 million people are facing acute levels of food insecurity in 2024. Looking at the WFP's mission, Zhao says that it aims at transforming the lives of vulnerable population. He praises China for ensuring food security for 1.4 billion people and acknowledges that the government's market-based approach to agriculture as well as technological progress and huge productivity gains have contributed to China's remarkable achievements.
