ICJ to hear South Africa’s call to stop Israel’s Rafah offensive
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is set to hear South Africa’s petition seeking additional emergency measures ordering Israel to withdraw from Gaza’s Rafah City. The demand by South Africa is part of a case it lodged against Israel accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention in Gaza. Israel denies the accusation. In January, the court issued its first emergency measures in the case, ordering Israel to ensure its troops commit no genocidal acts against Palestinians in Gaza, allow in more humanitarian aid and preserve any evidence of violations. The hearings on May 16 and 17 will only focus on the additional emergency measures. It will likely take years before the court can rule on the merits of the case. William Schabas is a professor of international law at Middlesex University whose work focus on human rights and international criminal law. He says that South Africa's request for a renewed court order is to prevent Israel's complete destruction of the Gaza Strip.
