India election 2024: Why isn’t Modi’s BJP fielding candidates in Kashmir?

Al Jazeera English

The fourth phase of voting in India's general election is underway and Indian-administered Kashmir is one of the regions where people are casting their ballots. This is the first parliamentary election in the Muslim-majority area since Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked its special status in 2019. Modi's party, the BJP, has not fielded a candidate in the region. Christopher Snedden is a Political Scientist and Author of the book: "Independent Kashmir: An Incomplete Aspiration". He said the reason why the BJP is not fielding a candidate is a "fear of defeat". A reminder that Al Jazeera journalists were not granted visas by the Indian government to report on the election, from inside the country.
