Indonesia floods: At least 50 dead as homes washed away in torrential rains, landslides

The number of people killed by flash floods and mud slides in Indonesia's West Sumatra province has risen to at least 50, and more than 3,000 people have been evacuated, authorities said on Tuesday, with heavy rains expected until next week. "Of course, this data will continue to grow when those who are missing are found dead, and other bodies are found," the country's head of disaster mitigation agency Suharyanto, who goes by one name, said during an assessment of affected areas. Torrential rain on Saturday evening triggered flash floods, landslides, and cold lava flow - a mud-like mixture of volcanic ash, rock debris and water - in three districts in West Sumatra province. "Suddenly the lights went out and the water rushed in, I didn't have time to stand up, and I no longer had time to run and was just washed away by the flood," said 23-year-old flood survivor Roza Yolanda.
