At first glance, the painting seems to depict only perilous mountains and wilderness ill-suited for human life. However, upon closer inspection, one finds small figures, dwellings and pavilions in various parts of the scene. In terms of painting style, this artwork fuses the gentleness of the south with the toughness of the north. How did the artist come to compose such a masterpiece? Which techniques did he use that add to this painting's allure? Mariko Hatta from Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts provides her insights.
