The government of Canada and the province of Manitoba will be announcing funding for the ongoing wildfire response on Thursday. The Honourable Harjit Sajjan, President of the King’s Privy Council for Canada, Minister of Emergency Preparedness and Minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada, and the Honourable Dan Vandal, Minister of Northern Affairs, will be making the announcement alongside the Honourable Jamie Moses, Manitoba Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources. In northwest Manitoba, hundreds of people remained out of their homes as crews continued to battle an out-of-control wildfire that measured 316 square kilometers. Although the fire had not grown in two days, there was no end in sight to the battle against the blaze and no word on when residents might be able to return home. More than 500 people were told to leave Cranberry Portage and the surrounding area over the weekend as winds drove the fire close to the community. Many went south to The Pas, while others went north to Flin Flon. On Tuesday, provincial officials said that one end of the fire remained within 1,500 meters of Cranberry Portage. The latest provincial wildfire report shows that nine wildfires are burning in Manitoba, with two considered out of control.
