New London exhibition looks at fusion of sound and art

A new multimedia exhibition opening in London on Thursday, May 23, explores the fusion between art and sound. On at the 180 Studios exhibition space in central London, "The Vinyl Factory - REVERB" brings together more than 100 musicians and artists in what organizers say is the largest such show of its kind. Visitors can explore audio-visual installations by artists including Theaster Gates, the late designer Virgil Abloh and composer Caterina Barbieri. On show are also 100 records by a variety of artists which were released by The Vinyl Factory, which describes itself as “an independent British music and arts enterprise.” “The works presented here are very diverse in nature so you’ll hear all sorts of music being played here, from jazz to classical, from ambient to a variety of different electronic soundscapes. So there’s a real mix of music and art on offer,” Sean Bidder, curator at 180 Studios, told Reuters at a press preview on Wednesday. “And it really shows the sort of diversity and different approach to creating work using art and sound. It’s often thought of maybe perhaps a dry academic area but this is an incredibly vibrant show, which I think people of all ages and all backgrounds can enjoy.” Artist Es Devlin created a cinema screen from her sketchbooks for work "Screenshare," which is among the 17 installations. Visitors can watch a short film by her and take away a sketch page from the screen. “There are 365 sketch books and at the end of the film, there’s an invitation to take one sketch each. And it’s really like taking a piece of my book, taking a piece of my work. There’s 30 years worth of sketches there,” she told Reuters.
