OAS called to guard against threats to democracy

The President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights wants the Organisation of American States to guard against newer threats to democracy. Commissioner Roberta Clarke says these threats, along with disinformation and misinformation, are severely distorting the trust of citizens in public institutions and deterring their participation. She told the OAS it's essential priority is given to working together to consolidate democratic institutions, the rule of law as well as economic and social development, throughout the Americas and the Caribbean. Her comments came during a Special Meeting of the Permanent Council of the OAS to address the implementation of all aspects of the InterAmerican Democratic Charter and its challenges.
