Region warned of influx of sargassum seaweed

09/05/24

Barbados and the Caribbean have been warned to be on the look out for an influx of sargassum seaweed. The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) says a large quantity is on its way. Executive Director, Milton Haughton says some countries are already being impacted. His comments came during a discussion held at the 8th International Cooperation Conference of the Association of Caribbean States in Suriname. Though the sargassum seaweed is deemed a nuisance, Mr. Haughton says is a natural part of the marine environment that plays an important role in the marine eco-system. He has pointed the finger at climate change and nitrification of ocean water.
