Fierce fighting took place across Ukraine on Friday, as the country’s war with neighbouring Russia continues. On Saturday, Russia’s defence ministry said its forces had captured five Ukrainian villages as part of a renewed ground assault in Kharkiv. Russian ground and air assaults hit more than 30 villages in the Kharkiv region and killed at least three on Friday. Meanwhile, a missile strike that killed three people and injured eight in Russian-controlled Donetsk, is being blamed on Ukraine by the region’s Russian-installed eastern head. Addressing the lack of peace in Donetsk, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, “more than 30 combat engagements occur there every day,” calling the situation both “tense” and “extremely difficult.” Parts of Donetsk fell under control of Russian separatists in 2014 and became a regular target for Ukrainian shelling after Moscow kickstarted the ongoing war by ordering tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022. It has become more secure since Kyiv troops were forced from its outskirts earlier this year. On top of this, the governor of Russian-controlled Luhansk has blamed Ukraine’s military for a separate strike, at an oil storage facility, that killed another three people Friday.
