Temperatures of up to 47°C keep Indian voters away from world’s largest election

The mercury has soared beyond 45 degrees Celsius across India where a general election is ongoing. Polling begins in the capital New Delhi on Saturday (May 25), with temperatures reaching as high as 47 degrees Celsius there. Extreme heat is being cited as a reason for poor voter turnout, with climate experts blaming poor planning by the country’s poll body.
