Toronto drivers can expect mandatory breathalyzers for every GTA traffic stop

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are taking steps to combat what they say is a spike in impaired driving charges in the Toronto-area. The OPP says it will now demand a mandatory breath sample from drivers for every traffic stop in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Data shows impaired driving charges are up almost 30 per cent from five years ago in the GTA, meaning 11,000 impaired driving charges last year compared to more than 8,000 in 2019. There has also been a dramatic increase in collisions so far this year — around 50 per cent more — compared with the same time frame five years ago, police say.
