After Israel recently seized Gaza’s key border with Egypt – the Rafah border crossing – complicating truck shipments of food, the U.S. military has finished installing a floating pier for the Gaza Strip to deliver goods for Palestinians facing starvation. Officials say they are poised to begin ferrying desperately-needed humanitarian aid into the enclave that has been besieged with intense fighting due to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Many Palestinians, however, have reacted to the temporary U.S. efforts with cynicism, claiming aid deliveries by sea (and air) aren’t sufficient enough. "We don't want ships, we want safety," displaced Palestinian Hassan Abu al-Kass told a reporter on Thursday. “They throw food at us, like dogs, like beggars, that does not work. It brings us problems,” he added. “This level of aid remains insufficient,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Thursday, acknowledging Palestinian concerns. “We want to continue to press Israel to increase the level of assistant moving into Gaza,” she added.
