History was made at Maracas Bay this weekend as the Caribbean’s biggest open-water swim drew a record 440 athletes and produced not one, but two double champions.
The Subway Maracas Open Water Classic, presented by the Aquatics Sports Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ASATT), celebrated its largest-ever field across five race categories at Maracas Bay.
Tyrrel Celestine stole the show on the men’s side, taking gold in both the Adult 1000m and the gruelling adult 5000m races, claiming the title of undisputed male champion of the day.
On the women’s side, Marena Martinez was equally dominant. She successfully defended her 5000m crown, becoming back-to-back champion in the event’s toughest race, then added the 1000m female title to complete her own remarkable double.
In the 3000m, Josiah Parag topped the men’s field, while Keryn Burke took the women’s crown.
The Open Water Classic wasn’t just for the elites. From the youngest First Timers in the 500m to the Special Olympics athletes who competed with distinction, Sunday at Maracas Bay belonged to everyone in the water.
