Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that Uganda has 200,000 women suffering from the condition. Every year, 1,900 women develop the condition, but only 1,500 surgeries are performed. Uganda currently has only 25 fistula surgeons, which is insufficient. However, with assistance from partners, efforts are underway to clear the backlog of patients. Today, the UN's focus is on prevention to end fistula by 2030. Prevention entails encouraging women to deliver in hospitals and ensuring that health workers adequately attend to women in labor, promptly recommending cesarean section deliveries if necessary.
