Hundreds of people are believed to be dead after a massive landslide hit a remote village in Papua New Guinea on Friday. The natural disaster took place at approximately 3 a.m. local time and resulted in more than 50 Kaokalam village homes being buried, and presumably, many families, too. Local community leader Andrew Ruing captured footage of the devastating aftermath, showing people carrying their belongings as they traverse rocks and debris. He said landslides are an occurrence that has “never happened before” in the area. Residents have estimated the death toll to be over 100, however, officials have not yet confirmed. “There are more than 300 lives [that] have been covered,” Ruing said, later echoing residents’ pleas for aid from the national government and “whoever [else] wishes to help.” Prime Minister James Marape says emergency teams are actively responding to the disaster, adding that he will provide updates when they become available.
