India’s West Bengal state sweltered in a heatwave on Saturday (April 27), with the mercury exceeding 44 degrees Celsius (111.2 Fahrenheit) in some parts of the state. In the state capital Kolkata, residents sought shelter indoors and drank juice to keep themselves cool and hydrated. “What can the poor do? We have to do this to feed ourselves. The heat is unbearable,” said rickshaw puller Ram Ji Paswan. Vegetable stall owner Lolita said she had to put wet fabric on her produce to prevent them from going bad in the sun. India's weather office has forecast more heatwave days than normal between April and June this year. (Production: Sahiba Chawdhary, Feline Lim)
