U.S. President Joe Biden broke his silence on Thursday surrounding the Pro-Palestinian protests at university campuses across the country, as violent police crackdowns and counter-protests flared at schools like UCLA and Columbia. "We are not an authoritarian nation where we silence people and squash dissent." Biden said in remarks at the White House. "But neither are we a lawless country. We're a civil society. And order must prevail." Students at dozens of schools have rallied or camped out in recent days to oppose Israel's war in Gaza, demanding institutions stop doing business with companies that support the conflict. Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan offered sharp criticism of the police crackdown on encampments, saying authorities were displaying "cruelty" toward pro-Palestinian students and academics. "The limits of Western democracy are drawn by Israel's interests. Whatever infringes on Israel's interests is anti-democratic, antisemitic for them," he added.
